“It’s just feeling really, really like 1988 to me right now, Jonathan,” Messina told host Jonathan Lemire.
He reminded viewers that Dukakis started out way ahead in the polls but ended up losing in a landslide. Why? Voters believed Democrats were no longer in touch with real life.
That comparison wasn’t just talk. Messina backed it up with numbers that should terrify every Democrat running in 2024.
According to Messina, the Democrat Party is sitting at its lowest approval ratings since World War II. And the collapse isn’t just among Republicans or independents — even Democrats are turning their backs.
“66% of Americans disapprove of the Democratic Party, including the majority of Democrats because they don’t believe that we have a credible economic argument,” Messina admitted.
Think about that. A majority of Democrats now disapprove of their own party. When you’re losing your base, you’ve got a political crisis on your hands.
Digging deeper, the numbers get even worse. Messina admitted that Democrats are falling behind Republicans on every issue Americans care about.
They’re down 10 points on the economy, seven points on tariffs, and an eye-popping 24 points on immigration — one of the top issues for voters heading into November.
Former Senator Claire McCaskill, also on the panel, drove home the point:
“Democrats love to retreat into good environmental policy, good policy on women’s issues and cultural issues. We have the right position. But I cannot stress enough how I think you’re on the money with strength as it relates to what stuff costs.”
McCaskill cut to the heart of the matter: “everything is just too damn expensive.”
While families are crushed by soaring costs of food, gas, and housing, Democrats keep preaching about climate summits, pronouns, and fringe social issues. Messina admitted the party uses “language that no one around the kitchen table uses,” making them sound like they live on another planet.
This disconnect is devastating. Americans want leaders who fight for them, not elitist politicians who seem more concerned about illegal aliens than American families.
Messina also revealed what may be Democrats’ fatal flaw — weakness.
Recalling Obama’s poor performance in his first 2012 debate, Messina said, “I said to him, look, if you aren’t willing to fight for them, they’re not gonna fight for you. And you didn’t look like you were gonna fight for America in that first debate.”
Obama only recovered after coming out swinging in the second debate. That’s the kind of strength voters expect, and the Democrats simply don’t have it right now.
Messina argued that the fix is simple: “Look at the camera and say, I’m gonna get rid of these tariffs. I’m gonna focus on day-to-day costs and I’m gonna make your lives just a little bit easier.”
Messina’s words should send chills down Democrats’ spines. He’s essentially warning them that they’re heading for a 1988-style wipeout. Back then, George H.W. Bush carried 40 states.
Now, with inflation out of control, the border wide open, and Democrats obsessed with woke causes, the similarities are hard to ignore.
But here’s the catch: Democrats have shown no signs of changing course. If anything, they’re doubling down on the same policies and rhetoric that have already driven away voters.
That’s good news for conservatives. When your opponents are this disconnected from reality, the path to victory becomes clearer by the day.
