Jim Acosta’s career since leaving CNN has been one long search for relevance — and this week, he may have crossed the one line no decent journalist should ever approach.

The former network anchor decided to stage a conversation with an artificial intelligence simulation of a teenager killed in the 2018 Parkland school shooting, all in the name of pushing a political agenda. The move triggered a firestorm of condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Exploiting a Tragedy on Camera
On what would have been Joaquin Oliver’s 25th birthday, Acosta aired a “conversation” with an AI-generated version of the 17-year-old on his Substack program. The digital recreation, designed to look and sound like Oliver, was created in partnership with the gun control group Change the Ref — founded by Oliver’s parents.
Acosta addressed the AI as though he were speaking to the real teenager. “I would like to know what your solution would be for gun violence,” he asked.
