As Senate Majority Leader John Thune put it bluntly, “When you’ve got a $36 trillion debt, we have to do something to get spending under control.”

Apparently, not everyone got the memo.

Instead of standing firm on fiscal discipline, Senator Collins defended her betrayal with a meandering excuse about not receiving enough information. “The rescissions package has a big problem – nobody really knows what program reductions are in it,” Collins said. “That isn’t because we haven’t had time to review the bill. Instead, the problem is that OMB has never provided the details that would normally be part of this process.”

Translation? Collins is more concerned with red tape than rescuing Americans from runaway spending.

Murkowski, meanwhile, brushed off Trump’s warning that he’d withhold endorsements from Republicans who oppose his plan. “So I’m going to execute on it. The president can say what he’s going to say, but that’s fine,” she said, referring to her control of the budget process. That arrogance comes from someone who’s voted for mountains of pork-barrel spending over the years.

And McConnell? No surprise there. The longtime GOP leader—who’s made a career of undermining Trump—claimed the proposal lacked accountability: “They would like a blank check is what they would like, and I don’t think that’s appropriate.” This from a man who spent decades handing out blank checks to foreign governments and career bureaucrats.

Despite the attempted sabotage, Trump’s reform package now heads for a final Senate vote. Initially set to cut $9.4 billion, the bill was trimmed to $9 billion after a compromise spared $400 million for PEPFAR, the global AIDS relief program.

But Democrats are scrambling to stop it. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer took a swing at the bill’s aggressive approach, saying, “DOGE comes along with its chainsaw approaches. They just cut, cut, cut. They have no idea what the consequences will be, and they don’t give a hoot.”

That kind of reckless mindset is exactly what got America into this $36 trillion debt disaster in the first place.

With Trump pressing forward and Vice President Vance standing ready to break more ties, the fight is far from over. Schumer is already threatening a government shutdown if Republicans don’t cave—proof that the left is willing to burn the house down to protect their spending priorities.

But conservatives aren’t flinching. The White House is demanding action and warning Republicans that failing to back DOGE could have political consequences.

President Trump, in particular, is zeroing in on publicly funded media. He’s been crystal clear: outlets like NPR and PBS don’t deserve another dime of taxpayer money as long as they continue acting as partisan operatives for the radical left.

The Senate now enters up to 10 hours of debate before the next vote. If the bill clears the chamber, it will return to the House, then head to Trump’s desk. But if Congress misses Friday’s deadline, the wasteful spending will remain locked in—and the Swamp will win another round.

Let’s be clear: this moment is a litmus test for the GOP. Americans voted for bold leadership that would challenge the status quo—not for more business-as-usual backroom deals.

If Republicans can’t even stand behind defunding leftist media and slashing foreign aid, they’ve completely lost touch with the people who sent them to Washington.
