Jay Bratt, a top prosecutor in the Department of Justice (DOJ) and a central figure in the controversial Mar-a-Lago raid, has abruptly stepped down from his position, according to investigative journalist Michael Isikoff. Bratt’s resignation, which has not been publicly announced by the DOJ, has sparked speculation about a broader exodus of seasoned officials ahead of potential Trump administration appointments.
Bratt served as the chief of the DOJ’s Counterintelligence and Export Controls Section before joining Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team to investigate former President Donald Trump. His tenure became mired in controversy, with allegations of evidence tampering and misconduct casting a shadow over his work. Bratt’s abrupt departure is now being viewed as a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle between the DOJ and Trump’s legal team.

Isikoff reported that Bratt’s resignation may be linked to fears of retaliation from Trump’s allies, should they regain control of key justice positions. “Three sources familiar with the move described it… as a significant and even chilling event,” Isikoff wrote for SpyTalk. The report suggests that Bratt’s departure could foreshadow a wave of resignations among DOJ officials and FBI agents worried about their futures under Trump’s expected appointments, including Pam Bondi as Attorney General and Kash Patel as FBI Director.
