Donald Trump’s second administration faced fierce opposition in the Senate, with establishment Republicans doing everything in their power to derail his key cabinet picks. The battle reached a boiling point when former Representative Matt Gaetz’s nomination was torpedoed by McConnell’s allies last November.

After successfully blocking Gaetz, the establishment thought they had the upper hand. But Trump’s nominations for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. soon became the next targets.
