Legendary Hollywood actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, and new details about the scene paint a troubling picture. Authorities say the couple had been deceased for some time before a maintenance worker stumbled upon the tragic scene on Wednesday.

Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found alongside their dog, with initial reports indicating that decomposition had already set in. According to an affidavit obtained by People, Arakawa’s body was in a more advanced state of decomposition than Hackman’s.

Arakawa “showed obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet,” the affidavit states. Hackman’s body reportedly exhibited similar conditions, suggesting they had both been deceased for an extended period.
