On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a sweeping new redistricting map that cements Republican control of the Lone Star State’s congressional delegation. The move hands the GOP five new strongly conservative seats, a blow that Democrats admit could wipe out several of their incumbents.

With one pen stroke, Abbott delivered what Republicans had been working toward for months: a stronger, redder Texas. The law is expected to transform the current 25–12 GOP advantage into an overwhelming 30–8 majority, reshaping the state’s balance of power in Washington.
