The 34-year-old Michigan lawmaker attracted major support from progressive leaders, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib. Other prominent figures and organizations on the Democratic left also backed his campaign, helping McKinney build momentum against an incumbent with far greater financial resources.
The outcome is particularly notable because Thanedar had become a controversial figure within his own party.
During his time in Congress, Thanedar drew criticism from Democratic colleagues after pursuing articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump without first securing the support of party leadership. Despite that controversy, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior Democrats eventually backed Thanedar’s reelection campaign.
But endorsements from Washington leaders were not enough to overcome the growing opposition to the incumbent in his Detroit-area district.
Thanedar also faced questions surrounding his campaign finances. Federal filings showed his campaign had suffered more than $2 million in losses from cryptocurrency investments during the year, an unusual move that became a major talking point during the primary contest.
The congressman faced another controversy involving taxpayer-funded television advertising. Critics questioned spending by his congressional office on television commercials that, according to the criticism, closely resembled campaign advertising.
Those controversies gave McKinney an opening.
Rather than trying to match Thanedar dollar-for-dollar, McKinney built his campaign around his personal story, his Detroit roots and his record in Michigan government. He presented himself as a representative of working-class voters and argued that the district needed a different kind of leadership.
McKinney entered the congressional race roughly 16 months before the primary and quickly became a serious threat to the incumbent.
His campaign emphasized his experience growing up in poverty and becoming the first member of his family to attend college. He also pointed to his work in the Michigan Legislature as evidence that he understood the concerns of residents in the district.
His political platform, however, places him firmly on the progressive end of the Democratic Party.
McKinney campaigned in support of “Medicare for All,” major federal spending on housing and clean-energy initiatives, and restrictions on American military assistance to Israel.
That agenda helped him consolidate support from activists who wanted to push the Democratic Party further to the left.
The Michigan primary was part of a larger night of success for progressive candidates. Other left-wing candidates also scored notable victories across the state, reinforcing the impression that progressive organizations have developed a formidable grassroots operation in Michigan.
For Democrats, the Thanedar defeat could therefore carry significance beyond a single congressional district.
The result demonstrates that incumbency and financial advantages do not necessarily guarantee survival in a Democratic primary when a well-organized challenger can unite progressive activists and dissatisfied voters.
Thanedar first won the Detroit-area congressional seat in 2022 after spending heavily on his own campaign. His political identity has shifted over the years, adding another layer to the primary fight.
He initially positioned himself closer to progressive Democrats but later separated himself from the Democratic Socialists of America. Thanedar has said he left the organization voluntarily, while the local chapter maintained that he was expelled.
His political positioning subsequently changed again, including a more pronounced emphasis on his support for Israel.
McKinney used that history to portray himself as a candidate with a more consistent connection to the progressive movement.
The primary also highlighted the growing influence of grassroots organizations in Democratic politics. Groups that once operated largely outside the traditional party structure have increasingly demonstrated their ability to recruit candidates, raise money, organize volunteers and challenge established politicians.
For Thanedar, Tuesday’s defeat brings his congressional tenure to an unexpected close.
For McKinney, the victory represents the biggest political achievement of his career and gives Michigan’s progressive movement another high-profile win.
The broader message from the primary is difficult for Democratic leaders to ignore: voters in heavily Democratic districts may be increasingly willing to reject incumbents they believe have lost touch with the party’s base.
McKinney’s victory now puts him in position to advance toward the general election, while Thanedar must reckon with a stunning political reversal after only a few years in Washington.
The battle over Michigan’s 13th District may be settled in the Democratic primary for practical purposes, but the political consequences could extend much further. The result is another warning to Democratic incumbents that party loyalty from Washington leaders may not be enough when energized voters decide they want a different direction.
