Rep. Shri Thanedar’s political career in Washington has suffered a major setback after Michigan voters rejected his bid for another term in Congress.
State Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated Thanedar in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, according to election projections and subsequent reporting. The result delivers a significant victory to the party’s progressive wing and ends Thanedar’s effort to remain in the House after serving since 2023.
McKinney’s victory was not simply a challenge from another Democrat. It represented a broader effort by progressive activists and prominent figures on the left to remove an incumbent they viewed as out of step with their movement.
