Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) just found herself in hot water this Juneteenth—and not because of America’s past, but because of her own country’s present.

The congresswoman, who came to the U.S. as a Somali refugee, shared a Juneteenth message on X (formerly Twitter) commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. But after being called out for ongoing slavery and human trafficking issues in Somalia, Omar quietly deleted the post.
Omar originally posted, “160 years ago on June 19, 1865, slavery ended in this country. Today, we celebrate Black freedom, resilience, and achievement, and continue the work to root out systematic racism from our policies and institutions.”
That statement quickly caught the attention of conservative commentator Gunther Eagleman, who responded, “Somalia still has slaves. Ilhan should go fight to free her own people.” Just 13 minutes later, Eagleman followed up with, “She deleted her post.”
