President Donald Trump has once again stepped into the middle of a major Republican primary battle — and this time, longtime Texas Senator John Cornyn is feeling the heat.
The former president unloaded on Cornyn this week, branding the veteran senator “VERY disloyal” while rallying conservatives behind Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, one of Trump’s fiercest allies in the Lone Star State.
The showdown has quickly become one of the most closely watched Republican battles in the country, with Tuesday’s Senate runoff serving as another major test of Trump’s grip on the GOP base heading into the 2026 election cycle.
For years, Cornyn was considered untouchable in Texas Republican politics. But grassroots conservatives have grown increasingly frustrated with establishment Republicans they believe failed to stand firmly behind Trump during some of the biggest political fights in recent memory.
Now, Paxton is attempting to ride that frustration all the way to Washington.
