Federal immigration authorities clashed with a coordinated protest outside an ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, over the weekend after demonstrators attempted to physically block operations and trap officers inside the building.
What unfolded outside the Delaney Hall detention facility quickly escalated from a demonstration into a tense standoff, as ICE agents in tactical gear moved in to clear barricades that had been constructed to obstruct a scheduled detainee transfer on Memorial Day weekend.
According to officials and video posted by independent journalist Nick Sortor, the situation began Sunday evening when masked individuals were seen actively dismantling landscaped areas around the facility. One protester was filmed using a shovel to dig up large concrete pavers, which were then reportedly stacked and used to reinforce makeshift barriers surrounding entry points to the federal facility.
The intent, according to the Department of Homeland Security, was not symbolic protest but physical obstruction of law enforcement operations.
