Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and “apparently attempted to crash the plane with its passengers on board,” nearly all of them Israelis.
The allegations have raised serious questions about what happened inside the cockpit, how the confrontation began, and what prompted the aircraft’s sudden diversion.
Passengers Help Stop Alleged Cockpit Attack
The incident occurred Wednesday as Flydubai Flight 1073 traveled from Dubai toward Tel Aviv.
According to the account provided by Netanyahu, the confrontation escalated into a violent struggle between the two pilots. The aircraft then experienced a dramatic descent, prompting emergency alerts as the crew dealt with the unfolding crisis.
As the situation deteriorated, at least one passenger reportedly joined a crew member in forcing his way into the cockpit.
Netanyahu said an Israeli passenger described helping overpower “the attacking pilot while he was attempting to sabotage the aircraft’s systems.”
The passenger’s intervention, along with the actions of other people aboard the plane, may have prevented the situation from turning into a deadly disaster.
Netanyahu praised those who stepped forward during the emergency, crediting their actions with helping protect everyone aboard the aircraft.
“I salute these heroes, who demonstrated extraordinary resourcefulness and courage,” he added. “They saved many lives and prevented a disaster.”
The account paints a frightening picture of what passengers were experiencing as the aircraft descended and the struggle inside the cockpit continued.
Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia
With the situation unfolding at the controls, the aircraft abruptly changed course near the border between Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
The plane ultimately made an emergency landing at an airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, at approximately 9:45 a.m. local time.
Despite the alleged attack and the aircraft’s sudden loss of altitude, the flight landed safely.
Passengers reportedly rushed toward the front of the cabin during the confrontation. One traveler later described how people aboard the aircraft had subdued the alleged attacker and were protecting the injured captain as the plane approached Saudi Arabia.
Videos apparently recorded inside the aircraft showed bloodied passengers and an injured man, offering a glimpse of the frightening aftermath.
Both pilots sustained injuries and were hospitalized, according to officials at the Tabuk airport.
The pilot accused of carrying out the attack was taken into custody and questioned by Saudi authorities, Netanyahu said.
After the emergency landing, arrangements were made to transport the stranded travelers to their intended destination. A replacement aircraft subsequently carried the passengers from Saudi Arabia to Tel Aviv.
Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service reported that none of the passengers required immediate medical treatment upon arrival.
Flight’s Emergency Signals Trigger Fears of Hijacking
The incident also prompted immediate security concerns as officials attempted to determine what was happening aboard the aircraft.
Flight-tracking data showed that the plane transmitted emergency code 7700 before switching to code 7500, which is associated with hijacking or unlawful interference.
The aircraft later returned to the general emergency code.
The sequence of signals added to concerns that the flight might have been hijacked, although the precise circumstances behind the transmissions remain unclear.
Israeli fighter jets were scrambled as security officials monitored the developing emergency.
Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials also held emergency consultations while authorities worked to establish the nature of the incident and assess the potential threat.
Flydubai confirmed that an altercation had occurred aboard the aircraft but provided limited information about the confrontation.
A company spokesperson said crew members on duty were able to secure the aircraft.
The airline’s limited public comments have left significant questions unanswered, including what happened before the alleged stabbing and how the crew initially responded.
Motive Remains Unclear as Investigation Continues
While the passengers made it safely to Israel, the investigation into the cockpit confrontation is far from over.
Israeli authorities are examining several possible explanations for the incident, including whether the alleged attempt to bring down the aircraft was an attack specifically targeting Israelis or a suicide attempt.
At this stage, officials have not established a definitive motive.
It also remains unclear what triggered the confrontation between the two pilots, whether the alleged attacker had made any threats before the violence began, or precisely how the aircraft’s systems were affected.
The possibility of an ideologically motivated attack has not been established, and the available account does not resolve whether the incident was connected to the nationalities of those aboard.
Saudi authorities are questioning the pilot accused of the attack, while investigators work to piece together the sequence of events.
For the passengers aboard Flight 1073, the journey became an ordeal that few could have anticipated when they boarded a commercial flight from Dubai.
The aircraft’s safe landing and the passengers’ eventual arrival in Tel Aviv brought the immediate emergency to an end. But the disturbing allegations surrounding the cockpit struggle have left investigators facing a series of critical questions.
How did a routine international flight turn into an alleged attempt to crash a passenger jet? Until investigators establish what sparked the confrontation, the full story behind the terrifying midair episode remains unknown.
