U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken a hardline stance against illegal border crossings, announcing a significant military expansion along the southern border aimed at cracking down on trespassing migrants.
The Department of Defense recently annexed a 63-mile stretch of land near El Paso, Texas, designating it as part of Fort Bliss. This newly established “National Defense Area” marks the second such zone created along the U.S.-Mexico border in recent months, granting the military expanded powers to detain and charge illegal aliens who enter the restricted territory.
A similar zone has also been established near Fort Huachuca in Arizona, covering a wide swath of rugged border terrain in New Mexico. According to Hegseth, active-duty troops in these zones now have the authority to apprehend and temporarily detain illegal aliens before handing them over to the Department of Justice for prosecution.
