In the process, he discussed Shanghai-based businessman Neville Roy Singham and his relationship to numerous activist organizations operating throughout the United States.
Piker identified CodePink, the ANSWER Coalition, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation as organizations supported by Singham. He described the billionaire as “a funding vehicle for a lot of political movements in the country, a lot of activism.”
That statement immediately attracted attention from critics who argue that federal investigators have been attempting to map precisely those relationships.
According to NGO investigator Stu Smith, Piker’s comments did not undermine concerns about the network.
Instead, Smith argued they reinforced them.
“Hasan didn’t refute the network. He mapped it.”
The remark spread rapidly across social media as opponents of Piker seized on the clip.
The Billionaire at the Center of the Debate
Neville Roy Singham has been a controversial figure in Washington for years.
The American-born entrepreneur amassed a fortune after selling software consulting company ThoughtWorks in a deal reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Following the sale, Singham relocated to Shanghai, where he has since become a major benefactor to a collection of activist organizations and media projects.
Those organizations include CodePink, The People’s Forum, BreakThrough News, Tricontinental, the ANSWER Coalition, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
Republican lawmakers have repeatedly questioned whether those groups are simply advocacy organizations or part of a broader influence operation tied to interests aligned with the Chinese Communist Party.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith has previously expressed concern about Singham’s activities, stating that he “lives in Shanghai, maintains business ties with companies and individuals linked to the CCP” and “attends CCP forums on how to promote the party abroad.”
Those concerns have fueled calls for greater scrutiny of the nonprofit network connected to Singham’s funding.
Critics argue that organizations receiving substantial financial support from overseas-linked donors should face greater transparency requirements, particularly if they are involved in political activism inside the United States.
Cuba Trip Draws Federal Attention
The investigation intensified following the March delegation to Cuba.
The event, known as the “Nuestra América Convoy,” brought hundreds of activists from dozens of countries to the island nation. Participants reportedly met with Cuban officials, including President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Piker’s attendance quickly became a focal point after federal authorities began reviewing whether aspects of the trip complied with U.S. sanctions regulations.
Treasury Department officials are reportedly examining whether any participants provided support, resources, or assistance that could potentially violate federal restrictions involving Cuba.
Florida Senator Rick Scott delivered one of the sharpest criticisms of the delegation.
“Hasan Piker and CodePink went to Cuba, stayed in five-star hotels, mingled with the thugs of the communist regime, and completely ignored the innocent political prisoners who are being starved and tortured.”
The comments intensified political pressure surrounding the investigation.
A Growing Federal Probe
What began as questions about a single activist trip has evolved into something much larger.
Multiple federal agencies are reportedly reviewing various aspects of organizations connected to the network Piker discussed during his livestream. Congressional committees have also continued examining whether tax-exempt nonprofit structures are being used for purposes lawmakers never intended.
For years, supporters have portrayed these groups as grassroots movements driven by ordinary activists.
Opponents see something very different.
They argue the organizations function as components of a coordinated political apparatus financed by wealthy benefactors operating outside the United States.
Whether investigators ultimately reach that conclusion remains to be seen.
What is clear, however, is that Piker’s attempt to defend himself has created an entirely new wave of scrutiny.
A livestream meant to challenge federal investigators may have instead supplied them with fresh material to examine.
In the eyes of critics, Piker didn’t merely respond to allegations.
He may have unintentionally spotlighted the very network lawmakers have spent years trying to understand.
And now, Washington is paying even closer attention.
