A Michigan woman who allegedly opened fire on a man attacking her boyfriend inside a Dearborn retail store will not face criminal charges, according to authorities. The decision highlights the complicated questions surrounding self-defense when a confrontation turns violent in a matter of seconds.
The incident unfolded Saturday inside a White House Kicks store in Dearborn, Michigan, where surveillance footage reportedly captured a physical altercation that ended with a man suffering a gunshot wound. Investigators reviewed the available evidence before prosecutors decided against pursuing charges against the woman, who reportedly holds a valid concealed carry permit.
According to Detroit television station WXYZ-TV, the woman and her 36-year-old boyfriend had entered the store shortly before the confrontation. Video obtained by the station reportedly shows the boyfriend greeting another customer before a second man suddenly attacked him.
What began as a confrontation quickly escalated into violence. A witness told WXYZ that the woman drew her firearm after the fight erupted, apparently attempting to protect her boyfriend from the assault.
