Tensions flared on Capitol Hill Tuesday after Republican Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) referred to transgender Congressman Tim “Sarah” McBride as “Mr. McBride,” igniting outrage from Democrats.

McBride, a biological male who identifies as a woman, made history last November after securing Delaware’s lone U.S. House seat, becoming the first openly transgender member elected to Congress. Despite the left’s celebration of the victory, Republican lawmakers have not been shy in challenging the implications of McBride’s presence in women’s spaces.

Shortly after McBride’s election, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution aimed at barring biological males, including McBride, from using women’s restrooms in the U.S. Capitol. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) swiftly backed Mace’s resolution, reinforcing that transgender individuals would not be permitted in female-designated restrooms in the Capitol and House office buildings.
