In a sweeping move that aligns with his long-standing promise to dismantle the Department of Education, President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday cut nearly half of the agency’s workforce. This drastic reduction follows Trump’s repeated vows to abolish the department entirely, a goal long championed by conservatives.
According to an official release from the Department of Education, the agency is undergoing a major “reduction in force,” which will put close to 50% of its employees on administrative leave starting March 21.

“Today’s reduction in force reflects the Department of Education’s commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated.
