Under this extreme policy, gas-powered cars would vanish from dealership lots across the state over the next ten years. Worse yet, 17 other states have begun copying California’s plan, meaning the ripple effects could soon blanket the entire country.
Since California represents the nation’s largest auto market, manufacturers would be forced to churn out more costly electric vehicles while slashing gas and diesel options. Ultimately, every American — no matter where they live — would have to foot the bill for California’s reckless green fantasy.
House Republicans aren’t sitting back and letting it happen. They’re moving swiftly to overturn the EPA’s waiver under the Congressional Review Act, a process that requires only a simple majority vote in the Senate.
Representative Vince Fong (R-CA) has become a powerful voice warning against California’s dangerous influence.
“One state shouldn’t have the power to set vehicle policy for the entire country,” Fong said. “We need consistent federal rules to reduce confusion, lower costs, and ensure fairness.”
Fong pointed out the absurdity of California’s EV push by recalling a major embarrassment for the state: In 2022, the same week Newsom announced the gas car ban, California’s grid was so strained by a heat wave that officials begged residents to stop charging their electric vehicles.
“California hasn’t made the right decisions in building out electricity infrastructure,” Fong added. “So why would we model national energy policy after a state that is completely energy incompetent?”
Republicans, along with industry leaders, have raised alarms that letting California dictate the rules will cripple industries far beyond the state’s borders.

“This is not the United States of California,” warned American Trucking Association CEO Chris Spear. “California should never be given the keys to set national policy and regulate America’s supply chain.”
Fong made it clear that Gavin Newsom and his Sacramento allies have no business forcing their radical experiments on the rest of America.
“We have to undo all these mandates because if we don’t, not only will Californians continue to bear the financial burden, but all Americans,” Fong explained. “We’re sending a clear message to California that these waivers are repealed, there’s no reason to pursue moving forward.”
Biden’s team hoped to use California as a trojan horse to sneak radical energy mandates through the backdoor without needing approval from Congress. Knowing the American people would never vote for these insane ideas, the Left turned to activist bureaucrats to do their dirty work.
Yet Americans have already made their opinion clear at the dealership: Electric vehicles are piling up on lots because consumers simply don’t want them. Still, Newsom and Biden’s green zealots refuse to let reality get in the way of their ideological war against gas-powered cars.
“California is clearly the example of what not to do … when it comes to electric vehicle mandates,” Fong noted.
The fight isn’t over. With President Trump back on the political battlefield and conservatives rallying behind common sense, there’s still hope to stop California’s radical agenda before it steamrolls the nation.
