The liberal governor, who’s been quietly posturing for a 2028 White House run, has launched a lawsuit targeting Trump’s bold new tariff policy. According to KTLA, Newsom claims the president’s sweeping economic protections are “wreaking chaos” across the Golden State — a claim that seems more rooted in politics than facts.

This is the first time a state has ever tried to block a president’s tariffs in court — a dangerous precedent that could upend executive authority and weaken America’s position on the global stage.
Newsom’s legal team is using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as their weapon of choice. The 1977 law — originally signed by President Jimmy Carter — gives presidents broad powers to respond to foreign threats by restricting commerce. Trump’s administration invoked that authority to slap tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada, along with a 10% tariff on all imports beginning April 5.
