FLASH POLL: Could This Put Trump Over the Top?

According to the most recent survey performed by the Florida Atlantic University Mainstreet PolCom Lab, Florida Republicans continue to back former U.S. President Donald Trump decisively, despite Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announcing his formal presidential bid.

The survey indicates that among GOP primary voters statewide, Trump is in the lead with a commanding 20 percent edge over DeSantis. Only 30% of Republican voters favor DeSantis, compared to 50% who support Trump.

“The poll highlights Donald Trump’s quite durable support. He does especially well with white working-class voters, who have consistently formed a steadfast base for the former president,” Professor of political science at FAU Kevin Wagner, Ph.D.

An noteworthy result from the study is that 20% of Republicans believe that backing a candidate other than Trump during the primary constitutes betraying their loyalty. This is a significant barrier for any candidate wishing to counter Trump’s enormous influence.

Despite some discouraging data, the most recent poll shows a positive growth for DeSantis. In Florida, the difference between Trump and DeSantis has just shrunk by 7%, indicating that the forthcoming election may become more close.

Furthermore, the survey indicates that DeSantis would defeat Biden by 13% among Floridians (49 vs. 36%), which is higher than the 10% advantage Trump has over the president. 54 percent of Floridians said they “strongly” or “somewhat” approved of the job that DeSantis is doing as governor, according to the study.

“These poll results could be an important motivator for DeSantis to promote his bid for the Republican primary, as he may be a stronger candidate against the incumbent,” Dr. Dukhong Kim, an associate professor of political science at Florida Atlantic University, stated.

The battle for the Republican presidential nomination is dominated by Trump and DeSantis, with other contenders finding it difficult to get traction. Only 2% of people favor prominent leaders like Chris Christie and Mike Pence.

Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy, two minority GOP candidates, have drawn attention. Scott has a support of 2.5 percent, and Ramaswamy has a support of 3.6 percent. Notably, the poll reveals that people who identify as Black and Hispanic are more interested in these candidates.

A recent survey that was conducted between June 27 and July 1 comprised a sample of 933 Florida voters.
