Moments after the win, President Donald Trump personally called the team to congratulate them on their achievement and extend an invitation to the White House for the upcoming State of the Union address. It was a gesture consistent with Trump’s long-standing habit of honoring American excellence, particularly when it comes to sports and national pride.
As expected, Trump also brought his trademark humor into the conversation. Referring to the U.S. women’s hockey team—who had recently won gold over Canada in identical overtime fashion—Trump joked about the political consequences of celebrating only the men.
“And we have to, I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,” Trump said. “I do believe I would probably be impeached (for not doing so).”
WATCH:
The players burst into laughter. Not out of disrespect, not out of malice—but because they understood the joke and the reality behind it. Trump’s critics are always looking for a reason to manufacture outrage, and everyone on that call knew it. They were also laughing for another reason: Trump is genuinely funny, whether his critics like it or not.
Predictably, the humorless outrage machine immediately fired up. A group of miserable liberal feminists took to social media to attack not only Trump, but the men’s hockey team itself for the unforgivable sin of laughing. In their worldview, even Olympic heroes must walk on eggshells if the joke comes from the wrong political figure.
The meltdown extended into left-leaning sports media circles, including an employee at Barstool Sports, an outlet ironically known for being politically incorrect. The online tantrum was so unhinged that Barstool founder Dave Portnoy stepped in and publicly suggested a wellness check for the employee in question—a move that only underscored how detached from reality the backlash had become.
What should have been a unifying moment—American athletes standing tall, honoring their country, and celebrating a hard-earned victory—was nearly overshadowed by ideological bitterness. Still, the outrage failed to stick. The image Americans remember isn’t the online screaming. It’s the sight of Team USA winning gold, players wrapped in red, white, and blue, and a president proudly celebrating American greatness.
No amount of liberal fury can erase that.
