Authorities have arrested a Virginia man, Brad Spafford, 36, after uncovering what is being described as the largest cache of homemade explosives ever recorded by the FBI. Federal agents are calling Spafford an “extreme danger to the community,” raising concerns about the potential threat he posed.
Explosives and Firearms Discovery
Spafford’s 20-acre property in Smithfield, Virginia, was searched by authorities, who reported finding over 150 homemade explosive devices. Among them were several pipe bombs labeled “lethal.” The investigation began after Spafford faced charges for possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle, initially seen as a lesser offense.

In an affidavit, an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force agent detailed suspicions that Spafford had been stockpiling weapons and ammunition for years. The agent further noted that Spafford sustained disfigured fingers from a July 4, 2021, incident involving a homemade explosive.
