Confidential Source Reveals More Alarming Details
The FBI investigation was bolstered by information from a confidential human source (CHS). According to the source, Spafford had been preparing for what appeared to be a coordinated plan. The CHS stated, “Spafford and his friends are preparing for something that Spafford would not be able to do alone.” The source also revealed Spafford’s habit of manufacturing approximately 50 rounds of homemade ammunition daily.
During a gun range visit in May 2023, the source observed Spafford with a rifle suspected to be a short-barrel weapon. Additionally, Spafford allegedly shared photos of a “go box” stored in his SUV. This “go box” contained rifles, ammunition, medical supplies, Tyvek suits, food, water, and other emergency items.
Legal Violations and Federal Response
Federal law classifies a short-barrel rifle (SBR) as a firearm with a barrel under 16 inches. Despite Spafford openly admitting to owning an unregistered 10-inch barrel rifle, records show he did not hold the necessary tax stamps or permits for such weapons. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed Spafford lacked authorization for any explosive materials or SBRs.
Photos reviewed by Special Agent Megan Shumaker of the ATF in November 2024 further supported these claims. “Based on my training and experience, this appears to be an SBR based off the photograph. The barrel is not likely to be 16 inches,” Shumaker noted.

Broader Implications
The FBI described Spafford as a “clear and present danger” due to the scale of his stockpile and the potential for harm. The ongoing investigation into his activities has sparked debates about firearm regulations and the role of confidential sources in uncovering threats. Spafford’s arrest marks a significant moment in federal efforts to address domestic threats involving explosives and unregistered firearms.
As this story develops, questions remain about the motivations behind Spafford’s actions and whether others were involved. Federal authorities continue to work through the evidence to determine the full extent of the danger posed by his alleged stockpiling activities.
