Sources inside the FBI indicate that Wray is stepping down to avoid the indignity of being fired by Trump. According to Kerry Picket of The Washington Times, Wray plans to leave office on or before Inauguration Day.
“He’s going to be gone at the inauguration. On or before the inauguration,” a source familiar with Wray’s decision stated.
Deputy Director Paul Abbate is expected to take over as acting director following Wray’s departure. Abbate’s initial plan was to remain in his role until May or June to help facilitate the transition to new leadership. However, Grassley’s pointed criticism appears to have accelerated the timeline.
Grassley made it clear that he believes both Wray and Abbate have overstayed their welcome. “It’s time for fresh leadership at the FBI,” Grassley emphasized in his letter.

Trump allies dismissed Durbin’s argument, pointing out that the president has the authority to fire an FBI Director for any reason.
During a recent interview, NBC anchor Kristen Welker attempted to corner Trump with a pointed question about his plans for Wray.
“Are you going to fire the current FBI Director Christopher Wray who you appointed?” Welker asked.

Trump, never one to shy away from confrontation, responded bluntly: “Well, I can’t say I’m thrilled with him. He invaded my home. I’m suing the country over it. He invaded Mar-a-Lago. I’m very unhappy with the things he’s done and crime is at an all-time high.”
When pressed further, Trump sidestepped the question, hinting at Wray’s imminent departure. “It would sort of seem pretty obvious that if Kash Patel gets in, he’s going to be taking somebody’s place, right? That somebody is the man you’re talking about.”
