Mangione, a former computer science student from Maryland, was widely regarded as intelligent and athletic. He was well-adjusted socially and engaged in his community. However, his life took a dramatic turn after a 2023 back surgery to address chronic pain from a pinched nerve. Friends say his upbeat personality faded, replaced by growing isolation and frustration.

R.J. Martin, founder of Surfbreak, a co-living community where Mangione resided in 2022, described him as “articulate and engaged,” even organizing a book club for fellow residents. However, Mangione’s debilitating back pain curtailed his activities, straining his relationships and cutting off his cherished surfing pursuits. After his surgery, communication with friends and family became sparse, culminating in his complete disappearance from their lives in June or July.
