California Governor Gavin Newsom appears to be gearing up for a battle with Donald Trump before the President-elect even takes office. However, critics argue this is less about governing California and more about laying the groundwork for his own presidential ambitions in 2028.
Newsom wasted no time signaling his intent to clash with Trump. Following the confirmation of Trump’s victory, Newsom convened a special session of the California State Assembly, proposing to allocate $25 million for lawsuits against the incoming administration.

“His rhetoric is only heightened and his call for retribution and revenge is pretty clear,” Newsom said of Trump. “We responded to his assault on California, where he tried to unwind our progress. And so what we’re doing now with a special session is not waiting to react to that. We’re preparing for that in a much more sober way.”
