Elon Musk has long been a close ally of President Donald Trump, advising him on economic innovation, government efficiency, and federal reform. But a new rift has emerged between the two heavyweights—this time over what Musk sees as a betrayal of fiscal responsibility in Trump’s signature legislative effort.
Trump’s much-hyped “One Big Beautiful Bill” is supposed to be the crown jewel of his domestic policy platform. It delivers on key promises: a permanent extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts, new tax breaks for businesses, and the elimination of federal taxes on tips—an issue Trump has made a rallying cry at campaign stops across the country.
The bill also includes red meat for conservatives: it pulls federal funding from Medicaid programs that pay for abortions or transgender surgeries, and it pumps serious money into border security and mass deportation efforts.
But despite these wins, one detail has sent Elon Musk into a public tailspin: the bill racks up a massive $3.8 trillion in new national debt.
