The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General (OIG) revealed that California improperly billed the federal government $52.7 million for individuals with “unsatisfactory immigration status.”
In plain English — taxpayers were footing the bill for healthcare given to illegal immigrants.
The OIG concluded that California should repay every penny.
States Quietly Expanding Coverage for Illegals
Duckworth’s statement might sound good on social media, but the reality is far uglier.
Several blue states have gone beyond federal limits to offer taxpayer-funded medical care to noncitizens.
According to The Wall Street Journal, states like California, Minnesota, and Illinois have become battlegrounds over ballooning healthcare costs linked to illegal immigrant coverage.
Federal law only allows reimbursement for emergency medical treatment for those without legal status. But as the OIG audit shows, states have been stretching — or outright breaking — those rules.
“States are generally prohibited from claiming Federal reimbursement for Medicaid services, other than treatment of an emergency medical condition, provided to certain noncitizens with unsatisfactory immigration status,” the OIG reported.
That “other than” clause has become the loophole Democrats don’t want to talk about — and taxpayers are the ones paying for it.
Speaker Johnson and JD Vance Expose the Shell Game
House Speaker Mike Johnson quickly called Duckworth’s bluff, posting on X:
“Congressional Democrats and the Mainstream Media are saying that Chuck Schumer’s $1.5 Trillion Dirty CR Counteroffer does not allow illegal aliens to get free healthcare. But IT DOES.”
Johnson explained how Schumer’s proposal would quietly undo Republican safeguards that prevent Medicaid fraud and illegal coverage.
“The Democrat CR would repeal our Working Families Tax Cut policies that eliminated waste, fraud, and abuse from Medicaid—including all our protections against taxpayer-funded health care benefits going to illegals,” Johnson wrote.
Vice President JD Vance echoed the warning on Fox & Friends, saying Democrats want to “reinstate Biden-era federal funding for emergency healthcare for illegal aliens that was ended under the Trump administration.”
The Real Democrat Agenda
This isn’t a one-off scandal — it’s part of a pattern. Democrats publicly deny giving benefits to illegal immigrants while federal audits repeatedly prove otherwise.
The California case exposes a deeper national problem: states quietly exploiting loopholes to make taxpayers subsidize services for people who entered the country illegally, while politicians in D.C. pretend nothing’s happening.
