Country music has lost one of its most recognizable voices, but Dolly Parton’s influence stretched far beyond Nashville.
Parton, the singer-songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist whose career spanned generations, died Tuesday, August 25, at the age of 80 after what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer. Her death was confirmed by multiple major news organizations, including CBS News, the Associated Press and People.
According to the statement released by her representatives, Parton died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville while surrounded by loved ones. The specific type of cancer was not publicly disclosed.
