In a public response to the damning report, Cherfilus-McCormick claimed she has been cooperative. “The Committee on Ethics has not yet concluded its review of the allegations, and no decision has been made at this time. As outlined in the Committee’s public statement, the referral for further review does not imply that any violation has occurred,” she said. “I fully respect the process and remain committed to cooperating with the Committee as it works to bring this inquiry to a close.”
Still, the evidence laid out by investigators paints a deeply troubling picture.
The OCE’s findings suggest her congressional office may have “made payments to an entity in violation of House committee rules and standards of conduct.” The report also raises the possibility that her campaign “accepted and failed to report in-kind contributions that may have exceeded applicable limits.”
Additionally, Cherfilus-McCormick is being accused of handing out political favors and misreporting campaign donations—some of which may have been made using another person’s name.
The House Ethics Committee has now voted to escalate all five allegations to an investigative subcommittee, indicating the seriousness of the case. This next step could lead to subpoenas, hearings, and further legal ramifications depending on what the panel uncovers.
It’s not the first time Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick has been the subject of ethics concerns. In December 2023, another complaint was filed against her, alleging she broke campaign finance laws during her 2022 special election. That case is also still under review.
According to a Punchbowl News report, the original referral for the misuse of federal funds was submitted about a year ago. Because the investigation wasn’t wrapped up in the mandated timeline, the House Ethics Committee was forced to release the findings to the public—highlighting just how serious the accusations are.
While the Florida congresswoman continues to proclaim her innocence, the allegations stacking up against her suggest a disturbing pattern of questionable behavior. Voters and watchdog groups alike are demanding accountability.
Whether this turns into another classic case of a D.C. politician playing fast and loose with taxpayer dollars remains to be seen. But one thing is clear—this investigation isn’t going away anytime soon. The Ethics Committee is now fully engaged, and Americans have every right to expect answers.
