U.S. Rep. David Scott, a long-serving Georgia Democrat who spent more than 20 years in Congress, has died at the age of 80, according to a family confirmation released Wednesday. His passing immediately sets off political maneuvering over one of the most reliably Democratic seats in the entire Atlanta metro region.
Scott represented Georgia’s 13th Congressional District beginning in 2003. The district—covering portions of Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton, and Rockdale counties—has long been considered deep-blue territory. With his death, the seat will now head to a special election, expected to attract a crowded Democratic primary field while Republicans are seen as having little realistic path to victory in the general election.
Early Political Roots and Rise in Georgia Politics
Born in South Carolina, Scott’s political career began early and steadily built over decades. His first major political experience came in 1972, when he worked on Andrew Young’s congressional campaign. Just a few years later, he stepped into elected office himself, winning a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974. He served there from 1975 to 1982.
