A new “Real or Fake” quiz from Rand Paul is putting Washington’s spending habits under a microscope—and the results are as bizarre as they are revealing.
The quiz challenges Americans to distinguish between actual federal expenditures and items so outrageous they sound invented. According to Paul, that’s exactly the point. In a political climate where billions are routinely allocated across thousands of programs, the line between satire and reality has become increasingly difficult to spot.
One example included in the quiz asks whether the U.S. government funded a project described as “food justice” through a so-called “Pickle Equity Initiative?” Another question asks whether the Department of Veterans Affairs supported experiments involving teenage ferrets and alcohol consumption.
Both are presented in the same format, forcing participants to decide what Washington actually did—and what Paul’s team simply made up.
The senator’s team argues the confusion is intentional. When government spending becomes this sprawling, they say, absurdity becomes indistinguishable from policy.
