New questions surrounding the health of longtime Sen. Mitch McConnell have emerged after his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China just days after the Kentucky Republican was hospitalized following what reports describe as a serious medical emergency.
Chao, 73, departed for Beijing only three days after McConnell, 84, reportedly required emergency medical treatment at his Washington, D.C., residence. The trip quickly drew attention because of its timing, particularly as details surrounding the senator’s condition have remained limited.
Chinese state media published photographs showing Chao participating in a June 17 meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. During the meeting, the two reportedly discussed issues involving U.S.-China relations and opportunities for continued engagement between the two nations.
