Skid Row’s Powerful July 4 Message to America-Haters

While many politicians, activists, and celebrities spent Independence Day criticizing the United States, a very different message came from one of the country’s most overlooked communities.

Residents living on Los Angeles’ infamous Skid Row—an area known for chronic homelessness, poverty, addiction, and crime—used the Fourth of July weekend to express heartfelt appreciation for America, its freedoms, and the sacrifices made by those who built and defended the nation.

The patriotic interviews were conducted by journalist Jonathan Cho in partnership with Frontlines, Turning Point USA, and the Discovery Institute as America celebrated its 250th anniversary. Instead of bitterness or resentment, many of the people Cho encountered spoke with gratitude about living in the United States despite the difficult circumstances they face every day.
