“Yesterday morning, I was called by the owner because, unfortunately, someone came into our daycare… we saw that the suspect came in from the back and broke in from the back kitchen, and he also destroyed the wall to come in,” Mohamed said.
He went on to describe what was allegedly taken during the incident.
“Our office doors was broke into as well. We saw that, unfortunately, important documentation, enrollment of the children, and also employee documentation, that was gone! There were also checkbooks that were ripped,” he said.
While burglaries are not uncommon in major cities, critics say this one strains credibility. According to Mohamed, the intruders somehow knew exactly where to go, bypassed anything of resale value, and removed only documents tied to enrollment, staffing, and finances—the very materials that could expose wrongdoing.
Rather than blaming criminals, Mohamed directed his anger toward the journalist who brought attention to the daycare operation in the first place.
“This is devastating news! And we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community, as one video made by a specific individual made this all happen,” he said, explicitly blaming Nick Shirley’s reporting.
Mohamed further claimed that his daycare has been receiving threatening messages as a result of the investigation.
“This is frightening and exhausting,” he said. “This is also sad that a video could cause all of this.”
WATCH:
Local media outlet CBS News was invited to the facility, where employees reportedly pointed out areas where the break-in supposedly occurred. However, many observers were left unconvinced. The idea that vandals would surgically remove only sensitive paperwork—while ignoring electronics, cash, or other valuables—has sparked intense online backlash.
Critics argue that if this were a random crime, the burglars would not have had such precise knowledge of the building’s layout or the location of specific records. Others have openly questioned whether the documents were destroyed or removed to prevent further scrutiny.
WATCH:
The incident has only intensified calls for deeper investigations into the daycare fraud allegations. Conservative commentators argue that instead of focusing on blaming journalists, authorities should be asking why such enormous sums of taxpayer money were flowing into these centers with so little oversight.
Adding fuel to the fire, social media users mocked the narrative, pointing out the almost cinematic convenience of the alleged theft. Some sarcastically asked whether the burglars also announced political slogans on their way out—highlighting how implausible the story sounds to many Americans.
At the center of the controversy remains a simple question: how do documents critical to public accountability vanish immediately after fraud is exposed?
As pressure mounts and public trust erodes, this latest development is unlikely to silence critics. If anything, it has drawn even more attention to an already explosive scandal—one that many believe is far from over.
