Former FBI Director James Comey appeared before a Virginia federal court Wednesday morning, officially entering a not guilty plea to serious federal charges of obstruction of justice and making false statements. The once-powerful lawman who oversaw the FBI’s handling of both the Hillary Clinton email scandal and the Trump-Russia probe now finds himself on the other side of the justice system — accused of deceiving Congress and manipulating investigations for political purposes.
Comey’s indictment came weeks ago, following a lengthy grand jury process that culminated in formal charges on September 25. Prosecutors allege that Comey lied under oath during a September 2020 Senate hearing, where he doubled down on his 2017 denial of authorizing any leaks to the press regarding the FBI’s investigations into Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
According to the indictment, Comey’s statements misled lawmakers and obstructed congressional oversight, a charge that carries heavy legal and political implications.
Ahead of Wednesday’s arraignment, reports began circulating that the FBI had been preparing a public “perp walk” for Comey — a scene many critics called a political stunt. But top Justice Department officials were quick to push back.
