California Democrat Rep. Katie Porter is learning the hard way that running for higher office means facing tough questions — and her recent outburst during a televised interview could be a turning point in her campaign. The congresswoman, who’s vying to replace Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom, appeared visibly irritated and defensive when pressed about her strategy to attract Trump voters in California’s upcoming gubernatorial race.
During an interview with CBS News investigative reporter Julie Watts, Porter was asked a simple, straightforward question: how does she plan to win over the roughly 40% of California voters who backed President Donald Trump? Instead of offering a plan or even a respectful answer, Porter fired back with a dismissive tone that stunned viewers.
“How would I need them in order to win, ma’am?” Porter shot back, glaring at the journalist.
That snide response set the tone for what quickly spiraled into an uncomfortable and combative exchange. Watts, unfazed by Porter’s hostility, pressed on, pointing out the obvious flaw in the congresswoman’s math.
