Enten didn’t hold back as he laid out the stark reality for Musk. “It turns out most of the people who like Elon Musk already like the GOP already—that is, they already have a party for ‘em! In my mind, there is just no base for Elon Musk’s third party in the electorate,” he said.
Musk rolled out his plan for the “America Party” over the weekend, claiming it’s a way to fight what he calls the corruption and financial recklessness of the two major parties. Musk declared that the current political system is “bankrupting our country with waste & graft.”
However, former President Donald Trump wasn’t having any of it. He torched Musk’s plans both online and in front of reporters, blasting the billionaire’s third-party push as reckless and pointless.
Trump took to Truth Social, warning Musk’s plan would only create “the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS.” And he didn’t mince words when speaking to reporters afterward.
“He can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous,” Trump told reporters on Sunday.
“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party. We have had tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion,” Trump added. “It really seems to have been developed for two parties.”

This public clash is just the latest episode in a swiftly unraveling relationship between the two men who were once surprisingly close. Not long ago, Musk funneled hundreds of millions into Trump’s campaign war chest and was reportedly given an influential role overseeing government spending as the de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency—known with Musk’s signature humor as the “DOGE.”
But that political bromance hit the skids last month when Congress passed Trump’s sweeping domestic legislation, nicknamed the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk trashed the bill as a “disgusting abomination” and vowed to fund primary challengers against Republicans who supported it. Despite Musk’s fury, the legislation sailed through with overwhelming GOP support.
Musk hasn’t provided many details about what the America Party actually stands for or who’s helping him build it. So far, his only hints point to Congress rather than the White House.
“Backing a candidate for president is not out of the question, but the focus for the next 12 months is on the House and the Senate,” Musk posted on X on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Trump appears ready to play hardball with Musk’s business empire. The former president has threatened to cut federal contracts and scrap tax breaks that Musk’s companies rely on. Over the weekend, Trump accused Musk of turning on him simply because his bill eliminated lucrative electric vehicle tax credits.
“I have campaigned on this for two years and, quite honestly, when Elon gave me his total and unquestioned Endorsement, I asked him whether or not he knew that I was going to terminate the EV Mandate — It was in every speech I made, and in every conversation I had,” Trump wrote. “He said he had no problems with that — I was very surprised!”
Musk had once championed the idea of ending taxpayer subsidies for electric vehicles but flipped his position this year after Tesla’s sales hit some bumps in the road.
Trump also revealed that personal drama may have added fuel to their feud. According to the former president, Musk was outraged when Trump withdrew the nomination of Jared Isaacman—a Musk ally and SpaceX astronaut—to head NASA.
Between CNN’s data guru chuckling on live TV and Trump dismissing Musk’s America Party as a sideshow, it’s clear the billionaire entrepreneur has an uphill battle if he wants to crash Washington’s two-party dance.
Whether Musk’s new party takes off—or fizzles out like a bad rocket launch—remains to be seen. But for now, Washington insiders and political analysts alike are watching the unfolding feud between two of the biggest names in business and politics with popcorn in hand.
