The United States has entered its first federal government shutdown in seven years after midnight on Tuesday, as talks in Washington fell apart. Once again, instead of working out a deal, both parties immediately launched a blame game, pointing fingers at one another.
This standoff is more than just a budget dispute. It’s turning into a political battlefield with both sides digging in, as next year’s elections loom large over every move on Capitol Hill.
Democrats wasted no time firing the first shot. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer took to social media right as the deadline hit, declaring:
“IT’S MIDNIGHT. That means the Republican shutdown has just begun because they wouldn’t protect Americans’ health care. We’re going to keep fighting for the American people.”
