A nearby memorial display was also defaced. Red paint was used to mark Kirk’s image, while the Christian message displayed on the memorial was targeted. Reports show the word “Jesus” was crossed out, with “Satan” appearing to have been written over it.
The statue itself was marked in several places. Red paint covered portions of Kirk’s face, neck and hand, while a frowning face was painted across the torso. Photographs released after the incident showed the extent of the vandalism.
Phoenix police began receiving calls about the damage shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday. Authorities opened an investigation, but no arrests had been announced in the latest reports. Turning Point officials said they were reviewing surveillance footage and working with law enforcement to identify whoever was responsible.
Turning Point USA Chief Operating Officer Tyler Bowyer condemned the attack on social media.
“This morning we woke up to radical criminals vandalizing our headquarters,” Bowyer wrote. “Crossing over Charlie’s face, scratching out Jesus and the Cross and spraying red paint on his neck.”
“This isn’t the country we want to live in,” he added.
The organization moved quickly to repair the damage.
By Sunday evening, TPUSA spokesman Andrew Kolvet announced that the statue had been cleaned and the damaged signs replaced.
“The team rallied and got the statue back looking good as new,” Kolvet announced Sunday evening. “Evil may never sleep, but neither do we. We won’t stop. We will win. They will lose.”
Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow and the current CEO of Turning Point USA, also responded to the vandalism. Rather than focusing solely on the damage, she pointed to words her husband had previously used about rebuilding after monuments are destroyed.
“Charlie once said we should be building two statues for every statue that they tear down,” she wrote.
She also argued that the attack would ultimately draw additional attention to Kirk’s legacy.
“They thought a bullet would silence my husband’s voice but it only made it louder. They think spray paint can obscure his legacy, but it will only spread it further. Every attempt to tear down what Charlie built makes us root deeper and work even harder.”
Kirk’s widow concluded with a direct reference to her Christian faith.
“God will not be mocked,” she said.
The vandalism comes amid continuing legal proceedings against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Kirk. Robinson has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, and a future court hearing is expected to address the next steps in the case.
The memorial attack is not the first disturbance at the Turning Point headquarters following Kirk’s death. Previous incidents at the site have also drawn police attention, adding to the organization’s concerns about security around its headquarters and memorial displays.
For TPUSA, however, the response Sunday was immediate: clean the statue, replace the damaged material and continue forward.
The bronze monument was restored within hours.
Whatever message the vandals intended to send, the damage did not remain in place for long. By the end of the day, the statue honoring Kirk had been cleaned and the memorial restored, while police continued working to determine who was responsible.
