A local health officer in California has reignited controversy by issuing a sweeping new mask mandate that runs directly against the Trump administration’s updated, science-based health guidance under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Sonoma County Defies Federal COVID Policy
Dr. Karen Smith, Interim Health Officer for Sonoma County, announced that beginning November 1 and lasting through March 31, 2026, masks will once again be required in a range of medical settings across the county.
The order mandates face coverings in “skilled nursing facilities, portions of long-term care facilities where nursing care is provided, acute and non-acute rehabilitation facilities, infusion centers, and dialysis centers” — in other words, nearly every environment involving medical care.
That means for the next 17 months, anyone entering these facilities will need to mask up — a move critics say ignores both science and federal leadership.
