Former President George W. Bush made an uncommon return to the Republican political fundraising circuit Monday night, joining Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, at a Dallas event aimed at supporting GOP Senate candidates in several closely contested races.
Bush appeared as a special guest at the fundraiser, which was organized by Cornyn and benefited a newly established Republican joint fundraising operation known as Maintain the Majority. The group is focused on directing financial support toward Senate candidates as Republicans attempt to defend their current control of the chamber.
The appearance was notable because Bush has generally remained removed from the day-to-day political battles that have defined the Republican Party since he left the White House in January 2009. His participation therefore offered a rare glimpse of the former president back in the political fundraising arena.
Monday’s event was built around six Republican Senate campaigns. The committee is supporting GOP incumbents Susan Collins of Maine, Jon Husted of Ohio and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, all of whom are seeking another term.
