Republicans have been down this road before. In 2018, during President Donald Trump’s first midterm, GOP lawmakers lost 40 seats in the House—even as the economy was expanding and unemployment was falling.
Now, as 2026 looms, Fox News legend Brit Hume is warning that the road ahead could be even bumpier. And he’s pointing to a reality Washington insiders can’t simply spin or legislate their way out of.
This week, Trump’s team gathered at the Capitol Club for a full-scale strategy session. Cabinet members, the chief of staff, and the deputy chief of staff convened to hammer out messaging on the economy ahead of the February 24 State of the Union address.
Hume, however, told viewers on Special Report with Bret Baier that messaging alone won’t fix the problem.
