Nearly five years after the nation watched grainy surveillance clips of a hooded figure placing explosive devices near both major political party headquarters, federal agents have finally announced an arrest. The long-running mystery surrounding the January 6 pipe bomber took a dramatic turn on Thursday when the FBI revealed they had taken a Virginia man into custody.
Brian Cole, a 30-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, is now facing charges including use of an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction of property. Authorities say he quietly assembled and planted pipe bombs outside the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee buildings on January 5, 2021—just one day before the events at the U.S. Capitol.
During a rare press briefing, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said agents cracked the case without any new tips or last-minute witnesses suddenly coming forward. According to Bongino, the breakthrough didn’t come from public leads but from painstaking investigative work within the bureau itself.
The newly unsealed affidavit reveals how investigators gradually traced Cole’s movements and purchases over several years.
