President Donald Trump signaled a significantly larger drawdown of U.S. forces in Germany over the weekend, telling reporters in Florida that the reduction now under consideration goes well beyond what had already been outlined by the Pentagon.
“We’re going to cut way down. And we’re cutting a lot further than 5,000.”
The remark immediately added new uncertainty to an already evolving military posture review in Europe, where the Biden-era force levels have remained largely steady since the post–Ukraine war buildup.
Pentagon confirms initial 5,000 troop withdrawal
Just one day earlier, the Department of Defense confirmed the beginning of a scheduled reduction involving thousands of American troops stationed in Germany. Officials described it as part of a broader reassessment of U.S. military positioning across Europe.
“The Secretary of War has ordered the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 troops from Germany,” Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
“The decision follows a thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe and is in recognition of theater requirements and conditions on the ground. We expect the withdrawal to be completed over the next six to twelve months,” he added. War Secretary Pete Hegseth ultimately issued the order.
