Residents of Rumford, Maine, woke up to a peculiar sight this week when their picturesque town was coated in an unusual blanket of brown snow. The bizarre phenomenon, which turned an otherwise serene winter landscape into an unsettling scene, prompted swift action and warnings from local authorities.

A malfunction at the mill caused a release of “spent black liquor,” a byproduct of the papermaking process, which then mixed with precipitation to create the brown-tinted snow, according to a post on the town’s Facebook page.
