Officials were quick to reassure residents that while the substance is non-toxic, direct contact with the snow could cause irritation due to its high pH levels. The town’s post warned, “The pH of this substance is 10 which is alkali and therefore a skin irritant. Although it is non-toxic it should not be touched or otherwise put in contact with skin.”

In response, the town reached out to the local school district to ensure children would be cautioned against playing in the discolored snow. “We are also notifying the school district to let kids know not to play with ‘brown snow,’” the statement added.

Authorities further advised pet owners to keep animals away from the affected snow. However, they expressed optimism that natural forces would soon resolve the issue. “We are hopeful the rain tomorrow will wash most of the substance away and flush it off the ground and people’s homes or property,” the town stated.

Environmental officials also weighed in to assess the situation. Tests by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection showed the pH level of the snow was 8, which is slightly alkaline compared to neutral water with a pH of 7.

Despite the unusual appearance, officials downplayed any significant health risks. “Based on state guidance, we are confident that the public safety concerns are minimal at this time,” the post explained. However, as a precautionary measure, they advised, “please avoid ingesting or direct skin contact with the brown snow.”

ND Paper, the company operating the mill, issued a statement taking full responsibility for the incident. The company explained that an operational malfunction caused the issue and pledged to investigate thoroughly.

“The cause of the operational issues are being, and will continue to be investigated,” the statement read. ND Paper added that it is cooperating with state regulators and taking steps to ensure such an incident doesn’t happen again.

While the town moved quickly to address public safety, the incident has sparked broader concerns about industrial oversight and environmental management. The release of industrial byproducts into the environment, even accidentally, serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between economic activity and ecological responsibility.

For now, residents of Rumford are left to wait for the rain to wash away the strange brown snow that has cast an unusual shadow over their winter wonderland. This incident serves as a cautionary tale for other towns with nearby industrial facilities, reinforcing the need for vigilant monitoring and preventive measures.

As the town grapples with the aftermath, residents can only hope this remains a one-time mishap rather than a recurring issue.
