According to CBS News, federal investigators in Houston have detained a 20-year-old Jordanian national who they believe is plotting an attack against Jews.

The person detained on October 19, Sohaib Abuayyash, is accused of illegally possessing a handgun. It was found that Abuayyash had received firearms training with the possible intention of carrying out an assault, according to court documents.
According to a detention order granted by a federal judge, Abuayyash mentioned a certain religious group and made remarks regarding “martyrdom” in Houston. Given this, an insider in law enforcement said that Abuayyash intended to target a Jewish gathering.
The judge also pointed out that Abuayyash had acquired material online from terrorist organizations, including how to make bombs.
According to an affidavit, Abuayyash applied for asylum in the United States after his visa expired in 2019. He was allowed to work in the nation until August 2025, but he was not allowed to possess or use a firearm.
Abuayyash was easily captured by the authorities on a firearms charge, and he was held without bond. They are carrying on their investigation in the interim and might file more charges down the road.
FBI Director Christopher Wray made references to Abuayyash in his appearance before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
Wray conveyed the FBI’s fear that violent extremists may target Americans as a result of the Middle East crisis.

“That includes … domestic violent extremists targeting Jewish or Muslim communities. We’ve already seen that with the individual we arrested last week in Houston who’d been studying how to build bombs and posted online about his support for killing Jews,” he said.
“The reality is that the terrorism threat has been elevated throughout 2023, but the ongoing war in the Middle East has raised the threat of an attack against Americans in the United States to a whole other level,” Wray had forewarned.
Despite the FBI’s admirable efforts, there is no denying that the unsecured southern border we currently have has made our country far more vulnerable.
A perilous situation is created by our country’s engagement in two wars and our tolerance for unvetted persons. To avert a possible catastrophe, we must take responsible action.

Wray pointed out on Tuesday, “the Jewish community is uniquely targeted by pretty much every terrorist organization across the spectrum.”
“When you look at a group that makes up 2.4 percent, roughly, of the American population, it should be jarring to everyone that that same population accounts for something like 60 percent of all religious-based hate crimes,” Wray said.
Thankfully, Abuayyash did not add to Houston’s statistic.
