Bezos’ Bombshell: Goodbye Seattle, Hello Miami!

The founder and former CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, has made a big decision: he is moving out of Seattle, the place where his international retail company began. A combination of pragmatic and emotional reasons led to this decision.

Bezos posts a heartfelt video to Instagram that shows off Amazon’s modest origins. The video shows his father taking pictures at what he affectionately calls the company’s original “office”.

“Seattle has been my home since 1994 when I began Amazon in my garage,” Bezos writes in the caption. “My father is the person behind the camera in this video, exploring Amazon’s initial ‘office’.”

“My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger (Miami Palmetto High class of ’82 — GO Panthers!) I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami,” he added.

“Also, Blue Origin’s operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral. For all that, I’m planning to return to Miami, leaving the Pacific Northwest.”

“I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here. As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart,” Bezos concluded.

Although Bezos’s message has a strong personal element, his choice has far-reaching consequences.

The Democratic administration of Seattle, dubbed the “Emerald City,” has brought about a lot of significant improvements in recent years.

Once heralded as a utopian experiment in community self-governance, the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP) zone is now a crime hotspot. The city’s previously busy streets have suffered greatly as a result of this increase in criminal activities. Crime rates have skyrocketed, local businesses have suffered, and residents live in terror. In spite of this, the Democratic leadership in the city doesn’t seem to want to deal with the problem and bring security and order back.

Miami, meanwhile, is a far cry from Seattle, where things are getting worse. Miami has become a shining example for companies and entrepreneurs in recent years. Francis Suarez, the city’s Republican mayor, has been aggressively pursuing digital firms and startups, positioning the area as the next major innovation hub—a kind of “Silicon Beach.”

Over 2,146 tech companies are based in Miami, and between 2020 and 2022, investments in tech startups increased by 278%. Miami boasts a legislative environment that promotes entrepreneurship, a business-friendly tax system, and an encouraging network of venture capitalists and investors.
